Nature, in her infinite wisdom,
gave us plants of every shape and size. The choice,
therefore, is a never- ending list of possibilities that can be modified
to suit each position, season and |
|
| personal preference. Formal,
contemporary, classic, miniture, eastern, small, large, minimalist,
elaborate, water..... |

The beauty of planting
in containers is that anything goes. But the key elements to getting
it right are imagination, balance, colour juxtapositions and themes.
Whatever the size of the plot - whether a country estate, patio, terrace
or just a window box - colour and texture of plants can be introduced
into an area where they would not otherwise thrive in the native soil
or just to add height or colour to dull areas.

There
are three types of colour rules when using the colour
wheel. Colours that compliment each other are:
Those directly opposite each other
Three colours spaced evenly
...around the spectrum
Four adjacent colours

Proportion and Shape: A partnership that can
bring organisation to the design. Because plants grow in different
shapes and sizes, bear this in mind when planning your container.
A
good rule to follow is to have the finished planting scheme
at least one and half times higher than the container and not to
exceed to more than half as wide.
There are a few basic shapes that can be followed to achieve
pleasing results:
|
- horizontal |
- vertical |
- oval |
- dome-shaped |
-
fan shape |
-
asymmetrical |
