With careful planning, areas of your garden and house can be transformed with a minimum of ease with beautiful pots, baskets, window boxes, planters and containers.

Eye-catching beauty and individuality are just a couple of the rewards for growing in containers. There are no rules, only guidelines and with this in mind, the atmosphere of the garden can change from one season to the next with the greatest of ease.

Which plants to use? The list is endless and will depend upon the type of pot you have. Small pots require small plants and larger pots or containers need either lots of plants or larger single plants. Read more…
Container gardening can provide height, form, texture and colour enhancing even the dullest of areas in an instant. Garden centres have an abundance of pots, baskets, troughs etc. Buying from an online garden centre is, of course, easiest. Crocus have a huge range and deliver to your door within days.

Planting up:
First things first. Drainage is of paramount importance with containers. Excessive watering with no drainage available can result in stagnant water killing your plants. Make sure there are drainage holes in the bottom of the container. Cover these holes with crock - pieces of broken terracotta or china, polystyrene pieces, gravel or large stones. The compost is then added at this stage. A good idea is to add water absorbing granules which will help keep the soil moist.

A suitable compost is needed for container growing. Ordinary soil does not contain enough nutrients, compacts too much resulting in preventing water from reaching the roots and may contain disease organisims. Regular feeding is required as all of the nutrients of the compost will be lost through watering.
A knowledge of plants and their respective soil types does help but the plant label has most of the essential information for planting. If you need certain plants in particular areas then check our 'plant index' section....
